Because women artist have for too long been overlooked in the study of art history, this course will examine the work of 10 women artist starting with Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun who painted portraits of Marie Antoinette in the 1700s to contemporary artist Faith Ringgold who is known for her story quilts. This course includes both a lecture and a hands-on activity. During each class meeting, we will have a brief lecture looking at images of each artist's work and her time, and then create our own art work based on the artist we are studying. For example, when we look at line drawings made by Agnes Martin, we will create our own meditative line drawings with paper and color pencils. No previous art experience required, just bring your curiosity.
