The name 'Louvre" is instantly recognizable as the most famous art museum in the world- located in Paris- the art capital of Europe. The aim of this series of lectures is not comprehensive. The focus is narrowed to just one of the seven departments of the Louvre [the most famous] the Department of Paintings which is responsible for European paintings from the Middle Ages until the mid-19th century. This course will begin with the French rivalry with Italy and then progress to rivalries with Spanish, Flemish and Dutch painters- all of whom were collected in France. Each lecture will focus on a number of major paintings that form a canon of European painting from the 15th through 19th centuries.
