Eleven years ago, billionaire Nick Hanauer warned his fellow plutocrats that “the pitchforks are coming.” Indeed, pitchforks wielded by the disaffected did come, not against the plutocrats but against elites perceived in other ways. In this class, we will explore the extents of gaps in riches, ranks, and respect in America, their sources and their consequences. We will view and discuss videos in which leading social scientists describe and debate past and current inequalities.
