Tennessee Williams wrote delicate, poetic plays that capture the passion, fragility, beauty, and the hypocrisy, cruelty, and impossibility of the American south, decades after the romantic drama of a bygone era had faded into a tortured oblivion. We will focus on Williams’ most famous works: The Glass Menagerie, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, and A Streetcar Named Desire, and also take loving glances at lesser known works by this prolific playwright. The sensitivity of Williams’ writing, rich with imagery and empathy for even his most difficult characters, and the depth of Williams' explorations of the human soul will make this class a rich experience to savor on a hot summer’s day.
