China’s musical heritage can be traced back more than 9,000 years to the discovery of the Jiahu bone flutes, among the earliest known playable musical instruments in the world. Across the centuries, it has evolved into a rich and diverse tradition shaped by regional cultures, artistic philosophies, historical events, and cultural exchange.

This eight-session course offers an accessible introduction to Chinese music, its historical development, traditional instruments, and the cultural contexts that have shaped its evolution. Through engaging lectures, listening examples, videos, live demonstrations, and interactive activities, participants will discover the distinctive sounds, aesthetics, stories, and even politics behind Chinese musical traditions.

The course will also feature guest musicians and scholars who will share their expertise, demonstrate traditional instruments, and offer unique perspectives on Chinese music and culture. Designed for participants of all backgrounds, this course welcomes anyone with an interest in Chinese music or culture.
No prior musical experience is required.
