ven before Facebook, Twitter, or the National Enquirer, during their husbands' term in office, First Ladies were the most well-known women in the country. They were either married or related to the most powerful man in the country and, in the last 100 years, the leader of the most powerful country in the world. We are familiar with their public face, but what about their private lives; their upbringing; their marriages; their children; the joys; the tragedies? What went on behind closed doors and out of the public view? How much influence did they have? Discuss these most interesting and unique ladies and their effect on the presidents' lives both before and during their presidency. Explore the evolution of women's inclusion in public life and affairs from the 18th century through the 21st century. Class participation and exchange of ideas is encouraged and welcomed. Part I will cover the introduction and First Ladies from Martha Washington through Mary Todd Lincoln.
