Course Description:

The Economics Workshop for Public School Teachers will provide educators of the Clark County School System with the skills and activities to teach economics in the classroom. The workshop will count as continuing education units and, upon completion, will go on their social studies license. The course is primarily asynchronous with online instruction videos, readings, and quizzes. There will be one Saturday morning class near the end of the course where educators will practice the concepts learned and the in-classroom activities. In addition to faculty, we will provide a graduate assistant to help with any questions during the learning experience.

In 2017, the Nevada legislature passed SB249 that requires high schools across the state to teach one-half unit of credit of economics in combination with or without American government, which was reduced from one whole unit of credit to one half. In addition, to teach economics in the Clark County School District (CCSD), teachers must have completed a minimum standard of coursework as an undergraduate, such as majoring or minoring in economics. If a teacher does not have the required background but would like to teach economics, they must complete 15 course hours of economics through an accredited program such as the UNLV Continuing Education Department. This course is designed for current teachers licensed to teach social studies in the state of Nevada but does not count towards a license in social studies. This course does count towards continuing education units for licensed social studies teachers in Nevada or educators wanting to learn more about economics.

The program is provided by the UNLV Center for Business and Economic Research (CBER) with the generous support of the Engelstad Foundation.

Course Delivery:

The program will be offered in an Asynchronous format with course content hosted on the university's non-credit learning management system, UNLVGO, powered by Canvas. At least two business days before the start of the class, you will receive an email from UNLVGO inviting you to “Finish Registration: Canvas.” Please visit, https://tinyurl.com/UNLVGO-Students to access the "UNLVGO Quickstart Guide" for more information on how to use UNLVGO. In addition to your online coursework, you will be expected to attend one in-person class hosted on a Saturday morning near the end of the course.

Cancellation Policy:

If you must cancel your registration, please send an email to crystal.miller@unlv.edu. Requests submitted on or before August 29, 2024 will receive a 100% refund of the registration fee. No other refunds will be offered after the start of the program.
