Few countries have influenced the aesthetic imagination of the Western world as significantly as France. Throughout this course, we will explore different distinct eras, examining how painting, architecture, literature, fashion, and philosophy intersected with the political and social upheavals of their time. Why did the French Revolution transform not just government, but taste? How did Paris become the art capital of the world, and what did it mean to lose that title? What threads connect Baroque splendor, Rococo whimsy, Romantic passion, and Modernist experimentation? No prior knowledge of art history or French language is required, only curiosity and a love of culture.
