Gardening in the Mojave Desert requires a different mindset than traditional gardening, sometimes described as extreme gardening. Instead of fighting heat, drought, and alkaline soils, successful desert gardeners learn to work with natural ecological systems. This course introduces participants to the basics of Mojave-adapted gardening using native plants, soil ecology, water-wise design, and regional ecology. Participants will explore how desert plants survive extreme conditions, how to mix healthy desert soil, and how to design landscapes that support pollinators and local biodiversity. By the end of the course, participants will leave with practical tools for creating low-water, ecologically resilient gardens that reflect the beauty and functionality of the Mojave Desert.
