Introduction to Short Fiction Writing

In this five-week course, we’ll study different aspects of the craft of writing short fiction, using the work of published authors, and a writing companion. Each class, except for the first, we will analyze one published short story, engage in group discussion about craft elements and techniques, followed by dedicated writing time where the instructor will guide the group through writing prompts. PDFs and links to stories will be provided before class. The focus will be on exploration, experimentation, and learning how to identify approaches, and techniques, and how to apply these to our own work. Students will leave with both a clearer sense of their craft and a keener eye for identifying how and to what effect other writers use the same tools. The idea is to spend a portion of each class thinking about (and practicing) how you can use the techniques we studied that day in your own work. Students will be encouraged to begin writing their own short story at the beginning of the class, for options to submit for feedback at the end.
