Deborah Arteaga Dr. Deborah Arteaga, CMI, CHITM, is a full professor of Linguistics in the Department of World Languages and cultures, where she has been a faculty member for 27 years. She has taught all levels of Spanish and French language and linguistics, and has supervised instructors of first and second year Spanish. She has held several administrative positions, including Department Chair and Associate Dean of the College of Liberal Arts. She has volunteered as an interpreter at the clinics of the organization Volunteers in Medicine of Southern Nevada for five years, and holds dual certification as a medical interpreter from the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters and the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters, and the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters. Dr. Arteaga has won several teaching awards, including Excellence in Classroom Teaching, Post-Secondary, from the Southwest Conference on Language Teaching, which encompasses a nine-state area (Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, New Mexico, Nevada, Oklahoma, Texas, and Utah). She has published six books and dozens of articles and book chapters on various aspects of linguistics. Her current research focuses on second-language acquisition by adults, language variation and teaching, and Medical Spanish.
