Imagine a class that is all in pictures! We’ll share scores of political cartoons as we explore American themes and events that have shaped and shadowed our lives. In this class we will continue the journey we began last summer during which we introduced ourselves to the inescapable influence that political cartoonists have had on our politics and opinions, our aspirations as a nation, and even the fickleness of our ever-changing national mood swings. We’ll take a look at how cartoonists of their days captured the essence of such complex issues as America at war, the wealth gap in periods of prosperity and economic crisis, the political fights that confound our ability solve compelling social issues, and the lingering images and characterizations of some of our most influence political leaders. Of course, we’ll also explore how cartoonists have viewed the scandals that have distracted us at key moments in our history. Every class will include a look at today’s “news in toons” as well. Political cartoons can make us laugh and they can make us mad. But mostly, the best of them make us think. It is a magic art. Emerson wrote that political cartoons are “often the truest history of our times.” What a perch from which to humorously and unabashedly look at ourselves!
