Wecome aboard! This class sets sail to explore the remarkable history of the Great Lakes—all five of them. From the early fur trading in the 17th century to the economic powerhouse that annually moves more than 143.5 million metric tons of cargo valued at $15.2 billion through the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Seaway, its history merits attention. Innovation and invention were the hallmarks of regional development, and, there is more. One unique activity that emerged in the late 19th/early 20th century provided an economic boost to the port communities-steam powered passenger ships. Cruising the Great Lakes became a destination that enabled weary urban dwellers the opportunity to escape the stiffing summer heat of the Midwest and East Coast, to relax and destress, and breathe fresh air.
