The decades between the last Impressionist exhibition and World War I formed a period of artistic questioning and risk-taking as artists searched for something entirely different from what had gone before. An exhibition dedicated to this vibrant period called “After Impressionism” recently closed at the London National Gallery. In this course, we will follow this exhibition to explore a period when artists broke with tradition and laid foundations for art of the future. It will begin with “three giants” who greatly influenced the next generations-Cezanne, Gauguin and Van Gogh. Then we’ll look at the artists who created a new, modern art expressing ideas and emotions in innovative forms.
