This class will cover at least two of Shakespeare's brilliant, bittersweet romance plays: The Winter's Tale and The Tempest. If our time permits, we will also discuss the lesser-known romance play Pericles, Prince of Tyre. The romance plays occur towards the latter part of Shakespeare's career, and the perspective on life they offer is strangely, poignantly suspended between his sunniest comedies and his bleakest tragedies. It is the instructor’s contention that the romance plays, for all their fantastical, magical plots and places and unlikely scenarios, hew even closer to “real life” than his other plays. How that might be so will be a key topic for class consideration.
