Following Sumerian, the Akkadian language is the oldest attested Semitic family of languages, in use for over 2000 years. As an introduction to this "lost language", you will become familiar with the basic grammatic structure of standard Babylonian, its Sumerian loanwords, and several cuneiform symbols, allowing you to construct or translate simple sentences. Language, history, and puzzle-solving are core themes of this class. You will indeed be able to "talk to the gods" of ancient Mesopotamia. Course materials will include examples of various cuneiform texts, occasional video clips from the "Great Courses" series, and many worksheets.
