This video-based course is the third and final phase of our quest to study China’s history, its relation to other parts of the world and what factors influence its political stance. Last summer we looked at China’s early history and its ambivalent relationship with the West. In the spring session we focused almost entirely on China’s civil war and the events and aftermath of the Maoist era. This summer we will study modern China, beginning with the rise of Deng Xiaoping and China’s struggles to recover from Mao Zedong’s failed policies and continuing to the present day. Under the guidance of Professor Richard Baum we will look at the efforts to reform the economy, the resistance to such reform, the relationship with Taiwan and Hong Kong and China in the 21st century. Again, our goal is to better our understanding of just what makes China tick.
