This course will cover three of Shakespeare’s plays that deal with protagonists who describe themselves, or are described, as outsiders: Richard, Duke of Gloucester (and subsequently king) in Richard the Third; Antonio the merchant and Shylock the Jewish moneylender in The Merchant of Venice, and the Moorish mercenary Othello in Othello. We will explore how outsider or alien status affects these characters’ self-definition, actions, and ability to function within societies that do not view them as full participants. How do the genres of the respective plays—history, comedy, and tragedy—in part determine our understanding of who these characters are and what they do?
