Italian Neorealism was perhaps the most influential movement in the history of cinema. Filmmakers like Vittorio De Sica and Roberto Rossellini rejected Hollywood-style glamor and instead used cinema to expose the hardship and desperation being experienced by ordinary people in postwar Italy. By using actual locations and non-actors, they ushered in a new era of cinematic realism. Beautiful, emotionally-moving masterpieces like “Bicycle Thieves” and “Rome, Open City” are considered to be among the finest movies ever made. In this class, we will screen several key films and discuss the important characteristics of this groundbreaking film movement.
