The veil of secrecy covering submarine warfare strategies and technologies employed by both the Allies and the Axis powers during WWII was finally lifted 50 years after the war. Dive into the history of WWII unrestricted submarine warfare, a type of naval engagement in which submarines sank vessels such as freighters and tankers without warning, as opposed to attacks per "cruiser rules" of the sea. Submarine warfare is largely a tale of rapidly-evolving military technology such as radio communications, navigation techniques, and radar systems. High stakes on the high seas led to a technological battle of wits and a war of inventive countermeasures that neither the Axis nor the Allied powers could afford to lose. The war at sea required a continual series of thrusts and counter-thrusts, as first one side then the other sought to gain the upper hand in the struggle to control the oceans.
