UNLV STEM Summer Camp - July 2022

Description:

The UNLV Howard R. Hughes College of Engineering and the UNLV College of Education are pleased to host the UNLV STEM Summer Camp - July 2022. The goal of this STEM camp program is to engage secondary students in doing STEM activities outside their traditional classroom, and developing problem-solving and critical-thinking skills needed for college and/or their future careers.

Format & Schedule Overview:

Students will have classes Monday through Thursday, from July 5 to July 29, 2022. The morning session starts at 9:30 am and ends at 12:30 pm. The afternoon session starts at 1:30 pm and ends at 4:00 pm. The camp offers a total of four workshops encompassing a combination of five different modules. Each student can select one workshop considering individual interest. During lunch break, students will participate in a variety of activities such as group discussions, camp tour, guest speaking, etc. that can motivate their interests, broaden their vision, and develop their thinking process. Below is a list of workshops for students to choose from in the summer:

Workshop 1 - Module 1 (Mathematics) & Module 5 (Coding in Python)

9:30 am to 12:30 pm - Mathematics
12:30 pm to 1:30 pm - Lunch & Activities
1:30 pm to 4:00 pm - Coding in Python

12:30 pm to 1:30 pm - Lunch & Activities
1:30 pm to 4:00 pm - Drones & Cybersecurity

Workshop 4 - Module 1 (Mathematics) & Module 2 (Drones) & Module 3 (Cybersecurity)

9:30 am to 12:30 pm - Mathematics
12:30 pm to 1:30 pm - Lunch & Activities
1:30 pm to 4:00 pm - Drones & Cybersecurity

Module Descriptions:

Module 1 - Mathematics Modeling and Reasoning: The mathematics program contains instructions and activities that include (1) Mathematics Content Knowledge, (2) History of Mathematics, and (3) Application of Mathematics, aiming at offering high quality and interactive mathematics learning experience to students. By integrating the three components, the mathematics program designers hope that students will leave the classroom with a deeper understanding of mathematics and bigger motivations for achievement in mathematics. To be specific, textbook-related practice and instant feedback will be essential in this program, covering selected content from grade 6 to grade 11 based on Nevada Mathematics Standards. Conceptual understanding of mathematics facts and utilizing multiple methods in problem-solving will be emphasized.

Module 2 - Drones: This module will teach students how to assemble and test a drone and a robotic car. During the robotics section, students will be guided to assemble, test, and improve a robotic car that can avoid obstacles and make automatic turns. This robotic car comes with an in house-built kit with motors, electronics, a couple of sensors and a wood car frame. In the Drone section, students will be led to build, learn, and fly a palm size UAV in both indoor and outdoor environments.

Module 3 - Cybersecurity: Want to crack your neighbor's WiFi, with consent of course? Or how about find out why connecting to that open McDonald's WiFi might not be safe? Or maybe you want to use the same tools used in Mr. Robot? Well here in this UNLV cybersecurity program we can provide you the knowledge to become familiar with the thinking of hackers as well as teach methods to keep yourself safer from your local hackers:). Essentially, this module will cover topics like Network Essentials, Network Analysis with Wireshark, Man-In-The-Middle Attacks, Password Cracking, among a few others.

Module 4 - Climate Change and Environment (End by July 21st): What types of birds visit your neighborhood? Do drought-tolerant plants really use less water? How does climate change affect local wildlife? How does extreme heat impact us? This module engages middle and high school students in hands-on activities that help them explore the science of their Nevada urban neighborhoods, or NatureHoods. Students will investigate the desert ecosystem, record native and non-native flora and fauna, observe climate change effects, measure human impacts, identify emerging scientific problems, and engineer solutions to environmental issues in their NatureHoods. Requirements: curious mind, fun spirit, and sense of adventure!

Module 5 - Start Coding in Python in Four Weeks: Python has become the fastest-growing programming language in the world. It is an excellent language to learn to program for beginners because it has simplified syntax. Python is used in web development, data science, creating software prototypes, and so on. This Python class will guide students to learn Python one step at a time. Topics covered include Strings, Lists and Tuples; dictionaries and sets; conditional execution and loops; functions; modules, etc. No Prior programming knowledge is required.
