French director Jean-Pierre Melville loved all things American: Chevy Camaros, Stetson hats, and Hollywood films, especially crime films. Beginning in the 1950s, Melville took the genre and elevated it into something uniquely his own. Trench coat-wearing tough guys were fated and alienated, living by an unspoken code in an indifferent world. Sparse dialogue, minimalist acting, and methodical narratives are some of the key characteristics of his films, which we will discuss at length. A true renegade, he crafted a cinematic world unlike any other. It could be said that Melville was “cool” in more ways than one. Come find out why.
